“Best dad ever.”
That’s what the birthday cake topper said. And I’ll be honest, it was nice to see it. It was encouraging. But at the same time, I looked at it and thought, I don’t really feel like the best dad ever.
I love my boys so much, but I know there are things I got wrong while raising them. And maybe you know that feeling too, whether it’s as a parent, a spouse, a friend, or just in life in general.
Sometimes you look back and realize you fell short.
The good news is that God already knows our limitations. He knows where we need help, and He does not turn away from us when we ask for it.
The Lord really is the best Father. He is patient, kind, faithful, and strong. He knows what we need, and He helps us when we don’t have enough strength on our own.
Psalm 22:19 says, “Lord, do not be far from me. You are my strength. I need you to come quickly and help me.”
That is such a simple and honest prayer. Lord, I need You. Don’t be far from me. Come help me.
I think sometimes that’s exactly where we need to start. Not by pretending we have everything figured out, and not by beating ourselves up for every place we have fallen short, but by turning to the Father who loves us and asking Him for help.
