“Now go out there and change the world!”
You’ve probably heard something like that at a graduation, a conference, or some big inspirational moment. It sounds good, and I understand what people mean by it, but I’ve been thinking about whether that is actually my role.
A pastor shared something online recently: “My role is not to change the world. My role is to simply be that part of the world already changed by Christ.”
That is such a helpful way to think about it, because I can influence my world. I can make decisions, learn, serve, create, encourage, and try to do good where God has placed me. But truly changing the world means changing hearts, and only Jesus can do that.
He is the One who gave me a new heart. He is the One still working in me. And if I’m honest, there are still things the Holy Spirit is trying to root out of my life. There are still sins that entangle me, habits that slow me down, and attitudes that do not look like Jesus.
Hebrews 12:1 says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders us and the sin that so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”
That verse reminds me that my focus needs to start with faithfulness. I do not need to carry the pressure of changing the whole world, but I do need to let Jesus keep changing me. I need to throw off what is holding me back and run the race He has marked out for me.
And maybe that is one of the best ways we show the world who Jesus is. Not by acting like we can fix everything ourselves, but by becoming people who are clearly being changed by Him.
My role is not to change the world.
My role is to be changed by Christ and live faithfully in the part of the world where He has placed me.
