Have you ever had something from your past come back to your mind at the worst possible time?
Maybe it’s something you said, something you did, a choice you made, or a season you wish you could erase. And even if nobody else is bringing it up, it can still start playing in your own mind like evidence against you.
I think the enemy loves to use that.
In 1 Timothy 1:13, Paul is really honest about who he used to be. He says, “Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.”
Paul doesn’t pretend his past wasn’t real. He names it. But he also doesn’t let it be the end of the story.
A few verses later, he says in 1 Timothy 1:14-15, “The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst.”
That gives me hope, because my past can hit me more often than I’d like. The enemy would love to use old sin, old shame, and old regret to discredit me or make me feel disqualified. But Paul reminds me that mercy is real, grace is abundant, and Jesus came to save sinners.
Yes, Paul had a past. Yes, you and I have a past.
But thankfully, in Christ, the story doesn’t end there.
