What words would you use to describe a hero?
Strong. Brave. Powerful. Someone who shows up at the right moment, rescues the person in danger, and saves the day.
That is probably part of why superhero stories are so popular. I love them too. There is something inspiring about watching someone with great power step in and help someone who cannot save themselves.
And the more I think about it, the more that picture points me to Jesus.
Jesus left His place of power and came down to us. He came for people who were weak, lost, and unable to rescue themselves. He saved us from sin and destruction, but He did it in a way no movie hero ever could.
He saved us through sacrifice.
Isaiah 53:5 says, “He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.”
Jesus did not defeat evil by showing off His strength. He laid down His life in love and obedience.
That is what makes Him different from every other hero we celebrate. He did not just rescue us from danger. He took our place.
The greatest hero in all the world is the One who loved us enough to give Himself for us.
