I had a conversation with a good friend who said after his divorce, "I was heartbroken. But I wasn't going to let her see it, or anyone else. It's weak to let people see you cry, don't you agree?" I asked him if he ever allows himself to cry and he said, not really. I then asked, "Do you find yourself exploding with anger over little things?" And he responded, "All the time!"
I told my friend that I used to do the same thing, until I allowed myself to be honest about my emotions. Now, if life is overwhelming, I'll let those tears flow. Then I dry my eyes and give my hurts to God in Prayer. I also encourage myself with my favorite Bible verse from Joshua 1:9, " Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Here are some other verses that may help:
- Romans 12:15: "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep"
- Luke 6:21: "You are blessed when you weep because soon you will laugh"
- Psalm 30:5: "Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning"
- Psalm 126:5: "They that sow in tears will reap in joy"
- 2 Samuel 12: David wept and refused to eat when his infant son was dying
- 2 Samuel 18:33: David cried openly when his adult son rebelled against him and was killed
Then I shared a video from actor/singer Tyrese who said that he was tired of trying to be tough, he too was heartbroken after his divorce, but he wasn't going to hold his tears in anymore. I hope it helped.
