What thoughts are building a mound in your mind?
I know that is a strange way to ask the question, but I started thinking about it yesterday when I walked into Tyler’s room and saw ants on his windowsill. And you know how that goes. Where there is one ant, there are probably more somewhere.
So I started looking around. Do we have an ant mound near the house? Is there a crack around the window? How are they getting in? I knew I needed to find the source and take care of it before a small problem became a much bigger one.
Eventually, I found where they were coming from outside and handled it. But later I started thinking about how I don’t always treat my thoughts with that same kind of urgency.
I can let one small, ant-sized thought come into my mind and just stay there. Maybe it’s a little bitterness, a little fear, a little jealousy, a little discouragement, or something that is not true about God, myself, or someone else. And instead of dealing with it right away, I let it hang around. Then another thought follows it, and then another, and before long, something has started building in my mind that never should have been allowed to stay.
That’s why 2 Corinthians 10:5 is such a helpful reminder. It says, “We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
Every thought. Even the small ones.
God does not tell me to ignore the thoughts that are leading me away from truth. He tells me to take them captive and bring them under the authority of Christ.
One little thought may not seem like much at first, but I don’t want to let anything build in my mind that pulls me away from Christ. I want to take it captive early and let the truth of God have the final word.
