Have you ever prayed for God to help, and then watched the situation get worse?
I think I usually have a pretty clear idea of what answered prayer should look like. If I’m asking God for help, I expect things to start moving in a better direction.
But Daniel’s story reminds me that sometimes God is still answering, even when the circumstances seem to be going the wrong way.
In Daniel 6, King Darius signed a law that made it illegal to pray to anyone but the king for 30 days. Daniel knew about the law, but he still went home and prayed to God just like he always had. The Bible says he was praying for help, and that word really stands out to me because if I were Daniel, I think I would have had some ideas about what “help” should look like. Maybe God would change the king’s mind. Maybe the men spying on Daniel wouldn’t catch him. Maybe somehow the whole problem would just go away.
Instead, Daniel was caught, found guilty, and thrown into a den of lions. From the outside, it probably looked like his prayer had not worked at all. But God had not stopped working just because the situation got harder.
God did not keep Daniel out of the lions’ den. He met him there and sent an angel to shut the lions’ mouths. Daniel survived the night, and the next morning he was able to tell the king exactly what God had done.
What looked like the worst possible outcome became part of a much bigger story that affected an entire kingdom.
That makes me think differently about the way I pray. Sometimes I ask God for help, and then I start judging His answer by what happens next. If things get harder, I can assume something has gone wrong or that God has not heard me.
Daniel’s story reminds me that harder circumstances do not mean God is absent. He may be doing something I cannot see yet.
So if you have prayed for help and what is happening around you looks nothing like what you hoped for, keep trusting Him. The prayer you prayed does not limit the God of the impossible.
