in a gutter
choked by bottles
daffodils bloom

Ambrosia: Journal of Fine Haiku, Spring 2009
It’s spring, the sun’s out, it’s getting warmer, so you decide to take a walk along the shaded towpath of a canal. While you’re walking you notice the storm gutter by the path is choked with litter, but also….hope. That’s a scene I saw back in 2009. I was so moved by the image of beauty blooming out of trash that it moved me to jot down my thoughts, which then became the above haiku that was published in literary journal
What was it about the yellow and green of daffodils growing out of litter that made me tear up? Jesus. No matter the amount of “garbage” choking our lives, Jesus gives new life. Those two or three daffodils I saw that one spring afternoon reminded me that there’s always hope, there’s always Jesus.
Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. –Isaiah 43:19
May God bless you this spring!
