I don’t usually forget to eat. I’ve got meals pretty much planned into my day – breakfast, lunch, dinner. And if I miss one? I feel it. I get hungry… or hangry, depending on who you ask. But I started thinking about this during Easter week, reflecting on the Last Supper and Jesus sharing a final meal with His disciples. It made me realize something.
If I miss a meal, my body lets me know. But if I miss time in God’s Word – sometimes days at a time – why don’t I feel that same hunger?
Jesus said in John 6 that He is the Bread of Life. And in Matthew 4:4, He said, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
So I’ve started treating my time with God like a meal. I schedule it into my day, and if I miss it, I notice. Because my spirit needs nourishment too. And the more I “feed” it, the more I realize – I really can’t afford to go a day without it.
